Sandra Birdsell 

Sandra Birdsell began publishing in 1982 and has published 5 novels and 3 volumes of short stories. Her novel, The Missing Child, received the WH Smith/books in Canada first novel award.   The Chrome Suite, received the McNally Robinson prize for the best book published in 1992 , and was short-listed for the Governor General’s Award, as was The Two-Head Calf, a collection of stores. 

She has been awarded the Marian Engel Award, Canada’s most prestigious prize given to a woman writer in mid-career. The Russlander, a novel published in 2001 was nominated for the prestigious Giller Prize. Her most recent novel, Children of the Day, is published by Random House Canada in 2005 and was recipient of the Saskatchewan Writers Award for Fiction. 

Birdsell has been writer-in-residence at the University of Alberta, the Universities of Prince Edward Island, and Vancouver, Waterloo and McMaster, and public libraries in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.  She has served on numerous volunteer arts related boards engaged in the advancement and funding of the arts in Canada.  She has attended conferences and reading in countries such as Italy, Poland, England and the United States.  She is founding member of the Manitoba Writers Build. Sandra lives in Regina.
