Robert Calder was born in Moose Jaw but grew up and was educated in Saskatoon. He graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with an Honours and Master’s degrees in English. His PhD was earned at Leeds University. He has been a member of the English Department of the University of Saskatchewan since 1965 and has held several positions at the university during that time. Calder has established himself as the world’s leading authority on Somerset Maugham with his critical study W. Somerset Maugham and the Quest For Freedom, his biography Willie: The Life of W. Somerset Maugham which won the 1989 Governor General’s Literary Award for Non-Fiction . In February 2004, A Richer Dust: Family, Memory and the Second World War was published and in May 2004 Beware the British Serpent: The Role of Writers in British Propaganda in the United States, 1939-1945. Calder has three children, and lives in Saskatoon with his wife, Holly, and their two Australian terriers. Away from his writing desk, he likes to fish, cook, travel and listen to serious music. |
