Born and raised in Edmonton, David Carpenter moved to Saskatoon in 1975. He began to write seriously after attending a summer workshop at Fort San in 1977. His first short story was published in Saturday Night in 1980. In 1985 his Jokes for the Apocalypse was nominated for the Gerald Lampert Award for best first book of Fiction in Canada. Several of his short stories and articles were nominated for a total of five national awards, and six of the articles won Western Magazine awards for journalism. Two of his books Courting Saskatchewan and Banjo Lessons won respectively, the Saskatchewan Book Award for nonfiction and the City of Edmonton Book Award. His latest book of poetry, Trout Stream Creed was nominated for 2003 Book of the Year Award at the Saskatchewan Book Awards. A frequent guest of CBC radio show, he also regularly reviews books for The Globe & Mail. |
