Marty Chan

Playwright, kid’s author, radio dramatist and television writer, Marty Chan is best know for his play, Mom, Dad, I’m Living with a White Girl, which had a successful Off Broadway run in 2004.  Before the New York premiere, the play had been produced across Canada (including the Persephone theatre in Saskatoon).  The play won a Sterling Award for Best New York and received ACTS Award from Harvard University. A one-hour adaptation of the play aired on CBC Radio in 2001.

For six years, Marty wrote and performed the Dim Sum Diaries, a weekly humour commentary series on CBC Radio.  His kids’ book, The Mystery of the Frozen Brains, was adapted from these commentaries.  The novel won the 2005 City of Edmonton Book Prize and Resource Links Magazine listed the novel as a top fiction pick in 2004.  His second novel, The Mystery of the Graffiti Ghoul, was launched in May 2006.

Marty worked as story editor on the Gemini Award winning kids’ television series, Incredible Story Studio, which was shot in Regina.  His television pilot, The Orange Seed Myth, won a Gold Medal in children’s television at the Charleston World Television Festival, and received a Golden Sheaf nomination at the Yorkton Short Film Festival.

Currently, Marty is the playwright-in-residence at the Citadel Theatre.  He lives in Edmonton with his wife Michelle and their tuxedo cats, Buddy and Max.  He’s working on a third kids’ book.
