Born and raised in Prince George, British Columbia, Brian Fawcett at age twenty-two, left to attend Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, obtaining a B.A.and remaining there after graduation as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow until 1970. Fawcett worked as a community organizer and urban planner in Greater Vancouver until 1985, and more recently has taught in maximum security federal prisons. Fawcett has been chairman of the Writers Union of Canada, served as editor of Books in Canada and has been columnist with the Globe & Mail in Toronto. Fawcett has also enjoyed a short career as a professional hockey player, but now writes full time, gardens and plays amateur baseball. He lives in Toronto with his wife, Leanna Crouch. His recent book Virtual Clearcut: Or The Way Things Are In My Hometown has been described as one of the best non-fiction books ever to come out of Canada. For this book, Fawcett received the Pearson Writers’ Trust Non-Fiction Prize in 2004. |
