Jerry Haigh The son of a British army officer, Haigh was born in Kenya, attended boarding school in England, and studied veterinary medicine in Glasgow. Graduating from veterinary college in 1965, Haigh returned to Kenya where his first patient was a giraffe with a sore foot. While living in Kenya, Haigh treated rhinos, elephants, zebras and pelicans as well as cattle, including those of President Jomo Kenyatta. He also met and married a Dutch doctor and together they combined their lives and medical skills to help both human and animal patients. Since coming to Saskatchewan he has developed an expertise in wildlife utliization, with a particular emphasis on deer species. In addition to teaching at the University of Saskatchewan, Haigh operates a thriving elk farm south of the city of Saskatoon which he calls “a serendipitous thing”. Haigh is well known for his more than 300 scientific, extension-related articles and his textbook entitled Farming Wapiti and Red Deer. He has now recorded his memoirs in his latest publication Wrestling With Rhinos: The Adventures of a Glasgow Vet in Kenya. |
