Kenneth Oppel was born in Port Alberni, British Columbia but grew up in two coastal cities, Victoria, British Columbia and Halifax, Nova Scotia. At the age of twelve he decided he wanted to be a writer. Kenneth started out writing sci-fi epics and then went on to swords and sorcery tales and at the age of fourteen started on a humorous story about a boy addicted to video games. Colin’s Fantastic Video Adventure was published in 1985 in Britain, the United States and France. It was the most exciting thing that had ever happened to him. The Live-Forever Machine was written while studying at the University of Toronto for a creative writing course. Oppel has written over twenty books for young readers, including the best selling Silverwing trilogy: Silverwing, Sunwing and Firewing have won numerous awards, including the Canadian Library Association Book of the Year for Children, the Mr. Christie’s Award, and the Ruth Schwartz Award, as well as several readers’ choice awards across the country. This year sees the publication of two new books: a fantasy adventure novel called Airborn, and a picture book, Peg and the Yeti, illustrated by Barbara Reid.
